Eid al-Fitr: the end of Ramadan celebrated on Monday, May 2, 2022

The holy month will end on Monday, May 2, 2022 for Muslims in France and in most countries. Others, especially in Asia, will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, May 3, 2022.

After a sighting of the moon during the night of doubt this Saturday April 30, 2022, the Grand Mosque of Paris announced the end of the Ramadan fast for Monday May 2, 2022.

What is Eid al-Fitr?

Etymologically, “Aid” means “party” and “El Fitr” comes from “Iftar” which means “lunch”. Thus, “Aid el-Fitr” marks the end of the fast observed throughout the month of Ramadan. Eid el-Fitr or the feast of the break, therefore marks the end of the fast of the month of Ramadan. It is celebrated on the first day of the month of chawâl, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is also sometimes called Aïd el Sghir “the little party”, as opposed to Aïd el Kebir, “the big party”.
