Eid al-Adha is one of the two major Islamic holidays that ends the long fast of the holy month of Ramadan. We tell you when Eid al-Fitr 2024 is, its basic traditions, prohibitions, and also how to beautifully congratulate believers.

Lent is a story

The tradition of celebrating Eid al-Adha dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad – according to legend, he established the celebration in 624. It is also known that the celebration was celebrated many centuries ago in the Arab Caliphate, the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, northern Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

Eid al-Adha is the second most important holiday in Islam after Eid al-Adha. In Arabic, Eid al-Fitr is called “Eid al-Fitr” or “Feast of Breaking the Fast.” For 30 days, during the month of Ramadan, Muslims observed strict rules: they refused to eat and drink during daylight hours. But with the onset of Eid al-Fitr, these prohibitions are lifted.

Eid al-Adha 2024 – beginning and end

Eid al-Fitr does not have a clear date – the Muslim calendar is based on the lunar calendar, so the start and end date of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr depends on the phases of the moon.

In 2024, Eid al-Fitr falls on April 10, but the celebration and prayers begin at sunset on April 9, that is, on the first day of the new lunar month. In many Muslim countries, the end of Ramadan is celebrated for three days, which are usually non-working days.

Traditions and prohibitions of the holiday of Eid al-Adha

Traditionally, celebrating Eid al-Fitr begins at night – with the onset of the new moon. At sunset, collective Eid prayers take place in mosques, and in the morning, holiday prayers are performed. There is also a tradition of going to the cemetery to visit the graves of ancestors and pray for deceased relatives. It is considered obligatory to give alms on the holiday and help those in need with food or money.

They prepare a variety of dishes for Eid al-Fitr and invite a large number of guests – relatives, friends and neighbors. They are treated to everything except alcohol and foods prohibited in Islam.

After the end of Ramadan, it is also allowed to eat and drink at any time of the day, smoke cigarettes, and have weddings.

On the holiday of Eid al-Adha it is prohibited:

  • work;
  • clean the house, do laundry and do any household chores;
  • quarrel, use foul language, refuse help.

It is believed that Eid al-Fitr is a chance for believers to start a new life and maintain the spiritual purity that they acquired during the blessed month of Ramadan.
