„In view of the war situation and in response to the recent recommendations of the International Olympic Committee, the Executive Committee of the European Handball Federation held an extraordinary meeting on Monday evening.”In the first part of the EHF’s official communication.
The official decision states that the national teams and club teams of Russia and Belarus will be excluded from each competition series. The decision is valid until further notice. In addition, Russian and Belarusian referees will not be nominated for future matches until committee members are invited to future meetings. The measures also apply to beach handball players and will take effect immediately.
What does this mean for the Champions League? For women, Roston-Don, who finished second in the Ferencváros group, and CSKA Moscow were excluded from the current competition, while Meskov Brest was included in the fate for men. Due to the former, the EHF may decide on the possible reorganization of the relegation phase in the coming days.

A brief press release on the official website of UEFA and FIFA does not detail the consequences of the suspension and the world political developments in which the current decision could be reconsidered, but the Russian national team will not qualify for this year’s World Cup qualifiers and Spartak Moscow will not play in the eighth final of the European League against CoR Leipzig.
UEFA has also announced that it will consider the partnership agreement with the Russian gas giant Gazprom for the Champions League, the 2024 European Championships and other UEFA national team events with immediate effect.
