It’s a colorful mix, this ice hockey team from EHC Regensburg. Some names are familiar from the EVR days in the youth ranks or in the first team. The age range also extends from 17 to 40 years. After Mitterteich’s 2:7 at the start of the North District League in Mitterteich, the EHC will now face ESV Würzburg in the first home game on Friday evening (8 p.m.).
Other opponents in the main round, which lasts until February 17th, are 1. EV Weiden, EHC Straubing, ERC Regen, ERV Schweinfurt 1b, ESC Haßfurt 1b and Höchstädter EC 1b. There are seven new additions to the 30-strong squad. In addition to Dennis Marusch, Philipp Sauer and Vincent Schmid, who come from the youth ranks of EV Regensburg and EHC Straubing respectively, Alexander Schardt joined the EHC. In the goalkeeper position, training as a physiotherapist took the 20-year-old Austrian Darius Schachenhofer from Styria to Regensburg. There are also Oliver Eckl (20), who played in the Leipzig Oberliga last season and for five DEL 2 games in Crimmitschau, and Christoph Eckl (25), who played the last three seasons in the Oberliga at Riessersee and before that in Frankfurt and Heilbronn also had DEL-2 stations, two of the four Eckl brothers born in Regensburg.
Serious exit
However, the EHC team also has to complain about the departure of Henry Deuschl for work-related reasons. We are all the happier that Michael Reichhart, who originally wanted to end his career, is now still available to coaches Bill and Ian Helmrath, who are supported by Mike Rümmler as team captain and supervisor.
Maximilian Rusch is not only one of the team’s players, who all pay their membership and expenses fee of around 200 euros (“We stay afloat with sponsors and city funding”), but is now also a board member. He came from Trostberg “almost ten years ago” and is one of the ex-student faction that forms the basis of the team. “So far, the squad has always decided who plays and who doesn’t because of some shift workers,” says the 31-year-old. “Let’s see how our luxury problem goes this season. Because we have never had so many players before.” 20 field players and two goalkeepers are each allowed on the score sheet. Rusch has also observed that money is now being used in the league and players are being signed. “We clearly distance ourselves from hand money and the like,” says Rusch, who expects the fight for the two playoff places in the nine-team league to be more even than ever. The first home opponents Würzburg, Regen, Mitterteich and Straubing, where Marcel Brandt, a national player and ex-Regensburg player, is taking his first steps as a coach, considers Maximilian Rusch to be the first contenders.
Meanwhile, the newly founded women’s team has achieved something historic: After three home defeats against Crimmitschau/Halle (2:6), Königsbrunn (0:6) and Munich-Angerlohe (2:3), there was a 4:3 away win in Angerlohe last Saturday to celebrate their first victory.
Cheers in the Olympic Hall
In the large Olympic ice rink, where EHC Red Bull Munich usually plays its DEL home games, the Regensburg women won after a great fight. The guests, who came with twelve field players and two goalies, scored the winning goal in the final third thanks to captain Doris Pirkenseer. The other goals were scored by Eirin Stendal, Wlada Gebert and Jasmin Ippisch when they were outnumbered. The EHC women continue their first league game season on Sunday. The team will welcome the Dingolfinger EC in the Donau-Arena from 5.30 p.m.
