EHC Red Bull Munich suffered a setback in the German Ice Hockey League two days after reaching the last sixteen in the Champions League.
Without nine injured, sick or paused players, coach Don Jackson’s team lost 4: 5 (1: 1, 3: 2, 0: 1) at the Augsburg Panthers after extra time.
Munich had initially turned a 1: 3 deficit in the meantime. After a match penalty against Augsburg’s Scott Valentine, the EHC turned a 2: 3 into a 4: 3 lead with two overpowering goals. After Magnus Eisenmenger equalized (45th minute), Vincent Saponari (62nd) became the match winner for Augsburg in overtime. With a convincing 6: 1 at the Swiss ice hockey champions EV Zug, the Munich team only made it perfect to reach the knockout round in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Nürnberg Ice Tigers continued their negative series in the first game under the responsibility of the former NHL coach Tom Rowe with the 2: 3 (0: 2, 1: 0, 1: 1) after extra time against the Krefeld Penguins. After just 24 seconds in extra time, the Franks had to accept the decisive goal from Krefeld’s Lucas Lessio.
The Kölner Haie from ex-national coach Uwe Krupp conceded a clearer 2: 5 (0: 1, 1: 2, 1: 2) against the Straubing Tigers. The Bietigheim Steelers continue to surprise positively. Against the Iserlohn Roosters, the promoted team held its ground 3: 2 (3: 0, 0: 1, 0: 1) thanks to a strong first period, although goalkeeper Sami Aittokallio had to go off the ice at the beginning of the second period due to injury.
