EHC Chur Vs EHC Basel

Equalization with the final whistle and efficient in the penalty shootout

(Report: Reto Büchler)

EHC Basel won the second test match in extremis away against league rivals EHC Chur with 4:3 after penalty shootouts.

Basel played with a new goalkeeping duo. Last Saturday, 22-year-old Colin Stauffacher was still in goal for Langenthal against Basel. From the 41st minute, his replacement, 18-year-old Pole Jakub Filip Wieczorek from the ZSC organization’s U20 team, also came on. Another new but familiar face was Swedish-Swiss dual citizen Philip Ahlström, who has played 271 games for various clubs in the second highest Swiss league.

The hosts started the game better and kept Stauffacher busy several times. It was only with the first Chur penalty that Basel were able to create their first opportunities. In a fast first period without many interruptions, the flying substitutions were practiced very well. Basel took the lead on the power play after Liniger had been brought down. Supinski saw Barbei in front of the goal, who only had to push the ball in. However, Basel only had a little more than a minute to celebrate. Then Berri poked the puck into the goal to equalize.

In the middle third, the two teams neutralized each other, so that there were no major opportunities. In the 36th minute, Schaub and Tschudi carried out a good forecheck while they were shorthanded, which was immediately successful. After skillfully stealing the puck, Tschudi scored to give Basel the lead again. But Basel also had their “mistakes” at the beginning of the final third. Both behind the goal and up front at the blue line, the puck was given away too easily to the Graubünden team. Marha and Dufey profited and gave Chur the lead for the first time within 38 seconds. The hosts were then well defended and did not allow much more. Basel had the best opportunities towards the end of the game with two power play opportunities. Five seconds before the end, Chur was given another penalty, which resulted in a face-off in front of Riesen. Supinski won this and actually scored the equalizer with the final siren.

Instead of extra time, a penalty shootout was agreed. Basel proved to be very efficient. Huber, Zubler, Bachofner and Barbei scored. Next Friday at 8 p.m. Basel will be playing against a National League club for the first time this season, against the SCL Tigers.
