Egypt’s Nuclear and Radiological Safety Regulatory Agency has given permission for the construction of the fourth and last 1,200-megawatt reactor of the North African country’s first nuclear power plant, the State Information Service of the Arab Republic reported, BTA informed.
The facility near the city of El Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast is being built by the Russian corporation Rosatom. Egypt and Russia signed an agreement to implement the project in 2017, and construction began in June 2022.
According to the plans, the plant will operate at its full capacity of 4,800 megawatts by 2030. Its owner will be the Nuclear Power Authority of Egypt (NPPA).
Moscow defines the project as the most significant example of Russian-Egyptian cooperation since the Aswan High Dam, built in the 1960s. The project is being financed with a $25 billion loan from Russia at three percent annual interest, with repayments over a 22-year term starting in 2029.
