Eleven days of fighting between Israel and Hamas erupted on May 10 amid raids by Israeli police around Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque compound and plans to expel Palestinians from Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah district to make way for Jewish settlers.

Gaza medical officials say Israeli air strikes killed 253 Palestinians. Rockets and missiles fired from Gaza killed 13 people in Israel.

Large posters of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Egyptian flags decorate the streets across the Gaza area to welcome Egypt’s intelligence chief Abbas Kamel.

Hundreds of people lined up outside Gaza’s entrances waving Egyptian flags as his motorcade passed.

Kamel’s visit is seen as Cairo’s attempt to regain a more vital role in mediation between Israel and Hamas and revive the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
