The Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, received this Tuesday the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, with whom he discussed the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the talks on a ceasefire.
Both sides also analyzed efforts to guarantee an exchange of detainees between Palestinian militias and Israel, a statement from the Egyptian presidency said. Joe Biden’s administration is under intense domestic and international pressure to pressure his main ally in the Middle East to force it to end the war campaign in the Strip.
During the meeting in this capital, the president emphasized Cairo’s work to increase the volume of humanitarian aid to that Palestinian territory, under Israeli fire since October 7.
The authorities of this North African nation repeatedly accused the neighboring country of hindering the entry of food, water, medicine and fuel to the coastal enclave.
El-Sisi demanded during the meeting with Blinken the need to implement the UN Security Council resolutions on the issue and adopt serious measures to achieve a fair and complete solution to the Palestinian cause in order to guarantee sustainable stability in the region.
Likewise, the president highlighted the fundamental role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Middle East (Unwra).
Benjamin Netanyahu’s government accused 12 of the 13,000 Unwra employees of allegedly participating in the operation of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7.
Both UNWRA and the UN announced an immediate investigation, but several Western countries, including the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, suspended funding to the agency, although the allegations have not yet been proven.
For his part, the head of US diplomacy expressed Washington’s interest in maintaining coordination with Cairo on the crisis.
Blinken began a new tour of the Middle East this week to address the war in Gaza, where more than 90,000 deaths and injuries have been reported to date.
