An Egyptian police officer killed two Israeli tourists and an Egyptian in Alexandria, the world agencies reported, citing local media and the Egyptian interior ministry.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed the information and clarified that the murdered Egyptian citizen was a tour guide for Israeli tourists.
The incident comes amid an escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas.
“An Alexandria police officer fired his personal weapon indiscriminately at a group of Israeli tourists. Two tourists were killed, as was an Egyptian citizen. The policeman was neutralized and detained,” said information from the Ministry of the Interior.
The attack took place at the Pompeian Column archeological site, local media reported.
Egypt made peace with Israel decades ago and was a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for years. But anti-Israel sentiments continue to be observed among Egyptian society, especially in periods of escalation of tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, BTA writes.
