Egyptian Institute of Astronomy: “miniature moon” approaching Earth within days

Dr. Ashraf Shaker, Head of the Astronomy Department at the Egyptian National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, said that the institute, through the telescope of the Katameya Astronomical Observatory and the satellite and space debris monitoring station institute, monitoring any space objects approaching the Earth, including the asteroid “PT5 2024”, which is expected to visit the Earth at the end of this September, and the results will be shared with other global observatories, including NASA.

Shaker pointed out in press reports, today, Saturday, that this asteroid was named “moon” by NASA scientists because it revolves around the Earth for a short period of time and then departs from it without making damage or fall to Earth, explaining that asteroids are rocks that move in our solar system; It can cause danger to the Earth, so we follow it from Egypt and the whole world, and there is a special program to monitor it from the Katameya Observatory at the institute.

It cannot be seen with the naked eye and it will not fall to the ground

He confirmed that the asteroid “PT5 2024” cannot be seen with the naked eye and will not fall to Earth. It will be monitored by astronomical telescopes to study it well and calculate its orbit in a more precise way, and to know about the possibility of visiting it. Earth in the future, and the possibility that after tens or hundreds of years it will be a threat to the planet Earth.

It should be noted that researchers from the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain, have confirmed that they have discovered a small asteroid that will orbit the Earth once, starting from September 29 to November 25 , before leaving for other parts of the solar system to publish the results of this discovery on various scientific sites.

According to the findings of researchers from the Complutense University, the asteroid has a diameter of 11 meters and has the code name “PT5/2024,” and it orbits the Earth twice before leaving the solar system again. .

The researchers pointed out that the discovery of the asteroid was made by the “Atlas” telescope in South Africa, and the researchers indicate that the asteroid will temporarily come under the influence of the Earth’s gravity, making it more likely to “little moon”.

But they explained that its brightness level is so low that it is extremely difficult to see with the naked eye, and would probably be difficult to see with amateur telescopes.

The researchers explained that the asteroid could come close to the Earth again on January 9, 2025, noting that the approach of these celestial bodies to the Earth allows scientists to get more -out about the solar system.
