Egyptian Football Association Apologizes for National Team’s Shock Exit from African Cup of Nations

In a rare incident, the Egyptian Football Association, on Wednesday, apologized in an official statement to football fans after the shock exit of the senior team from the round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations, which is being held in Côte d’Ivoire.

The “Pharaohs”, who hold the record for the number of titles in the tournament (7 times), were eliminated by penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday.

The Egyptian team, which reached the final match in the previous tournament, presented a lackluster performance throughout the current tournament, and did not achieve any victory in 4 matches, which angered the Egyptian street.

The matter reached the point where one of the parliamentarians submitted a briefing request addressed to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Youth and Sports regarding the modest performance shown by the national team, demanding that the person responsible for contracting with Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria, who receives two million and 400 thousand dollars annually, be held accountable, according to what was reported by the “Masrawy” website.

In a statement published on its account on the “X” website, the Egyptian Federation apologized to the Egyptian fans for not achieving their ambition or the goals of the Egyptian Federation’s Board of Directors, “which fulfilled its assigned role of meeting all requirements and providing all special means to prepare the team before and during the tournament,” according to the statement. .

The council said that it is holding a meeting next Sunday to discuss “the technical, medical and administrative reports and the report of the head of the mission and the supervisor of the team to take appropriate decisions.”
