Egyptian artist Sherif Mounir was exposed to a sudden crisis after he finished offering his condolences to the mother of Egyptian artist Dina El-Sherbiny, which ultimately prompted him to issue a public apology.
The story began after Sherif Mounir left the funeral hall, where he was surprised by a number of journalists asking him for a statement. While giving a speech about the event, he was surprised by a quick question from a female journalist.
But Mounir’s reaction was surprising, as he interrupted her and said, “Shhhhhh,” demanding that she be silent, and then he directed the conversation to her, saying: “Do you think you are a journalist or what?”
The Egyptian artist posted a video clip on his Instagram account on Saturday, in which he mentioned the situation that happened, and tried to justify his reaction by saying that he was surprised by the journalist talking to him.
He admitted that he immediately realized that his first response to the journalist was harsh, so he tried to remedy the situation and smooth things over with her, but he found himself saying to her, “Do you think you are a journalist or what?” He acknowledged that this response “is neither permissible nor correct.”
Mounir confirmed that he watched the video and felt angry with himself. He also read the comments that called him “in poor taste” and also “arrogant,” indicating that he actually “deserved” these comments because of his reaction.
He said that he learned from his father to apologize when he made a mistake, so the Egyptian artist publicly apologized to the journalist whom he addressed in this way, and asked everyone to accept his apology.
