Egypt to eliminate trans fats from food supply by October 2023, says health minister

Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, said that Fats trans fats are a major cause of more than 17 million deaths annually worldwide, and fats continue to increase rates of cardiovascular disease.

The Minister of Health and Population added: The Egyptian state has recently adopted a policy to free its food supply from industrially produced trans fats by October 2023, which will make Egypt the 49th country to join the World Health Organization program to rid the world of this substance that threatens to increase the risk of heart attacks and death.

She pointed out: The government issued a law regulating the technical rules for the maximum limits for unsaturated fatty acids in food, with the ban on hydrogenated oils, and a mandatory limit was set for trans fats, which would save the lives of more than one million people in the next twenty-five years, an estimated 8.39% of deaths heart disease coronary related to the intake of trans fats.
