Director of the Red Crescent Society, Derna, Libya, Fariha Al-Marimi, confirmed on Monday that Egypt was one of the first countries to send supplies and aid to Derna by land, sea, and air, noting that the repercussions and effects of the hurricane struck several cities and villages that were severely damaged, especially in the east of the country.
In an interview with Al-Youm Al-Sabea TV, Fariha Al-Marimi explained that the collapse of the first and second dams caused the disaster because these dams were unsuitable and needed maintenance, describing what happened as a humanitarian crime borne by the official who did not listen to the appeals that came out of Derna during the past years and presented technical reports warning against this. The two dams collapsed, noting that the dam collapsed in 2011, causing a number of casualties.
She stressed the necessity of evacuating the city completely, as electricity and the Internet were cut off after the hurricane, adding: “Buildings with their residents and entire cars were swept into the Derna Sea… The tragedy is great, and we did not expect to lose hundreds of families, families, and children.”
He pointed to the formation of a social affairs committee to follow up on the adoption of Libyan children in a number of cities in eastern Libya without coordination with the competent authorities, noting that the children of Derna have been harmed by what is published, whether through offensive publications about adoption, as well as the arrival of children to families that were not announced, and she continued by saying: We are afraid. From the loss of the lineage of these children, I appeal to all families and families who decided to adopt Derna children without coordination with the Ministry of Social Affairs.
She pointed out that there are no hospitals in Derna, as they work to treat the wounded and injured, and hospitals only treat emergency cases, noting the need to issue names and information about Libyan children from the city of Derna, whom we fear will lose their lineage, confirming the presence of thousands of missing people, and we hope that the rescue teams will succeed in finding them. The bodies of the victims were recovered from the Derna Sea.
She pointed out that frogman teams are continuing to retrieve the bodies of the victims from the Derna Sea, calling for international intervention to save the city and rebuild it away from the Libyan governments that did not notice the disaster that we talked about, which resulted in a disaster and the city of Derna turned into a disaster.
