Egypt president el-Sisi ready to open airspace for Qatar flights: Reports | Qatar-Egypt flights may resume; Report that the President is ready

Doha: Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has agreed to resume flights between Qatar and Egypt. Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed reported that Al-Sisi was ready to launch a Cairo-Doha flight. It is reported that Egypt has informed Saudi Arabia and the United States that it is ready to lift the air restrictions imposed on Qatar.

Egypt canceled flights to Doha in 2017 following the announcement of sanctions against Qatar. It also banned Qatari flights from using Egyptian airspace. Egypt is the only country outside the Gulf region of the four countries that have announced sanctions against Qatar. Other embargoed countries are Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain. The 41st GCC Summit kicks off tomorrow in Saudi Arabia. There are reports that Egyptian President Al-Sisi will attend this. But Egypt has not officially announced that the president will attend the GCC summit.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Saudi Arabia and Qatar will open the Salwa border, which shares a border. It closed in December 2017. Gulf media quoted border officials as saying that the Salwa border was about to open. But no official announcement has been made in this regard. Last month, the United States demanded that the Salwa border be reopened. This was the main topic of discussion during the US delegation’s visits to Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
