Egypt is in contact with senior Hamas and Israeli officials as well as other mediators today in an effort to restart negotiations for a truce in the Strip Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins on Monday or Tuesday, two Egyptian security sources said.
Egypt’s contacts with Hamas and Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency today were held after an authorization from the Egyptian presidency in an effort to bring together the divergent positions of the two sides, the sources said, without elaborating.
Qatar, Egypt and the US are trying to negotiate a deal to implement a ceasefire during Ramadan in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas in the October 7 attack that led to the war in Gauze.
The latest round of talks, which did not include Israel, broke down in Cairo this week. Israel’s Mossad said yesterday that efforts to strike a deal were ongoing, despite slim hopes of a truce before the start of Ramadan.
