Egypt Implements Ban on Niqab in Government Schools

Cairo: The government has issued a decree banning the wearing of face-covering niqabs in government schools in Egypt. The decision will be effective from the beginning of the new academic year, which begins on Saturday, September 30. Education Minister Reda Hegazi informed about this. He said that female students have the right to wear a headscarf but it should not cover their face. He said that a parent should be aware of their child’s dressing and should do so without external pressure.

The decision to ban the niqab in schools has sparked massive reactions on social media platforms. While some opposed the decision, others expressed their support.

For years there has been debate about wearing the niqab in schools in Egypt. Many public and private institutions in the country have already banned the wearing of the niqab.
