Egypt House of Representatives Calls for Increase in Subsidies to Alleviate Financial Burden

In a move aimed at alleviating the financial burden on citizens and improving their quality of life, a number of members of the House of Representatives in Egypt called for an increase in subsidies for food commodities during the coming period. Next fiscal year 2024.

Increase support for ration cards

In a move aimed at helping citizens overcome the challenges of rising prices, a member of the House of Representatives announced that he had submitted a briefing request addressed to the Minister of Supply, Counselor Hanafi Jabali, aiming to increase subsidies for ration cards by 25 pounds, and according to this request, the member requests an increase in the amount of support provided. Each one from 50 pounds to 75 pounds.

With the aim of helping families deal with escalating prices and relieving their financial pressures, this step comes within the framework of continuous efforts to improve the standard of living and achieve balance in light of the current economic conditions.

Additional support for food commodities

In the context of efforts to alleviate financial pressures on citizens and provide them with the necessary facilities in facing the challenges of high prices, MP Mohamed Badrawi referred to a new step represented in adding additional support for ration commodities. According to him, it is proposed to increase support for ration cards by 25 pounds, bringing the total support to 75 pounds per person, for the beneficiaries, who number about 64 million citizens.

Badrawi indicated that this positive step comes at an additional cost estimated at about 16 billion pounds, as the government is working on providing this additional support to ease the financial burdens on citizens and improve their living conditions.

He also referred to the government’s efforts to address the roots of the price hike crisis by facilitating the movement of goods through customs and improving the logistical flow mechanisms for those goods, which would help them reduce pressure on prices in the coming period and achieve greater stability in the markets.

Increase support for food commodities

In the context of continuous efforts to improve the living conditions of citizens, the MP recently stressed the importance of increasing the subsidy for ration cards to reach 75 pounds instead of 50 pounds, and the MP indicated that this increase in subsidies will directly contribute to enhancing the amount of goods provided to citizens on these cards, including Variety of basic commodities such as oil, rice, sugar and others.

The government decided to increase subsidies for food commodities during the new fiscal year, as subsidy allocations were increased by 42%, which will lead to improving services provided to citizens and providing them with the necessary support in light of the high prices.

This support was directed to five different economic agencies, including the General Authority for Supply Commodities, according to data published by the Ministry of Finance. This increase comes within the framework of the economic and financial challenges that the government is facing, and reflects its commitment to improving the lives of citizens and providing basic commodities at affordable prices.

Increase commodity subsidies per capita

In implementation of the ministerial directives announced by the Minister of Supply, Dr. Ali Al-Moselhi, the Ministry of Supply determined the per capita ration of food commodities for the year 2023. These directives included determining the quantity of food commodities provided to each individual on the ration card, allowing citizens to obtain their basic needs in an appropriate manner.

According to these directives, the per capita ration of food commodities will include a bottle of oil with a capacity of 800 ml per person, with the possibility of obtaining up to 4 bottles of oil as a maximum. Each person will also get one kilogram of sugar, and those who need more can get a maximum of 6 kilograms of sugar on the ration card.

The share of 4 individuals from the supply

The quantities of commodities offered vary according to the number of family members, as holders of cards with fewer than 4 members will receive a different quantity than holders of cards with 4 or more members, and this includes different amounts of rice and pasta.

The individual’s share of the supply includes the disbursement of other support dues, and a maximum limit is set for the value of the goods purchased with the support balance. If the person exceeds this limit, he must pay the excess amount in cash at a value of 5 pounds. The individual has the right to receive his support from the supply outlets within his governorate, and he can do so up to 4 times during the month.

This comes within the framework of continuous efforts to ensure the provision of basic commodities to citizens at affordable prices, and the provision of these services to millions of beneficiaries of subsidies in various regions of the country.
