Egypt dramatically progressed to the round of 16 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Failed to win Cape VerdeThe Pharaohs were helped by the results of the Mozambique vs Ghana match!
Egypt played their final Group B match against Cape Verde at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan, Tuesday (23/1/2024) early morning WIB. The match was held simultaneously with Mozambique vs Ghana because it was the deciding match.
Egypt, which previously only drew in the first two matches, needed a win to ensure direct qualification. Meanwhile, Cape Verde had already secured a ticket to the round of 16 with two wins.
Egypt fell behind after Gilson Tavares broke through in injury time of the first half. Trezeguet equalized in the 50th minute, which was followed by Mostafa Mohamed’s goal in the 93rd minute.
The victory in sight, which should have immediately guaranteed Egypt’s qualification, was instead shattered. Bryan Teixeira equalized the score in the 99th minute!
Egypt should breathe a sigh of relief because in another match, Mozambique dramatically held Ghana to a 2-2 draw. It’s nothing, Ghana had already taken a two-goal lead through Jordan Ayew’s penalties.
If that score holds, then Ghana will qualify with a collection of four points, one point ahead of Egypt. However, Mozambique then scored two goals in injury time, each from Geny Catamo’s penalty in the 91st minute followed by Reinildo’s goal three minutes later.
The draw left Ghana stuck in third place in Group A with two points, just ahead of Mozambique on goal difference. Both were confirmed to be eliminated while Egypt dramatically qualified alongside Cape Verde.
