Egypt, in its first official response to the “Queen Cleopatra” crisis, accused the Netflix platform of “falsifying Egyptian history,” and considered showing its heroine, who plays the role of Queen “Cleopatra VII,” with African features and dark skin, a “blatant historical fallacy.”
Dr. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in a press statement yesterday that “those in charge of making the film must investigate accuracy and rely on historical and scientific facts to ensure that the history and civilizations of peoples are not falsified.” He added, “It was necessary to refer to the specialists in archeology and anthropology when making this kind of documentaries and historical films that will remain a witness to the civilizations and history of nations.” Waziri confirmed that some ancient statues and coins show Cleopatra with Greek features, in terms of fair skin, a drawn-out nose, and thin lips.
Dr. Nasser Makkawi, Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Department at the Faculty of Archeology, Cairo University, stressed that the appearance of Queen Cleopatra in this film in this body contradicts the simplest historical facts and the writings of historians who confirmed that she was light-skinned and that she had pure Macedonian origins.
On her part, Dr. said. Samia al-Mirghani, former director general of the Antiquities Research and Conservation Center at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that biological anthropology studies and DNA studies conducted on ancient Egyptian mummies and human bones confirmed that the Egyptians do not bear the features of sub-Saharan Africans.
