Egypt and Jordan today condemned “Israeli aggression” in Lebanon, with Jordan’s foreign minister calling for an end to it after “a year of destruction in Gaza” and “escalation in the (occupied) West Bank”.
“We condemn Israeli aggression against Lebanon, we condemn Israel’s shelling of Lebanon’s capital, we condemn Israel’s killing of Lebanese citizens,” said Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s diplomatic chief who is visiting Cairo.
During a joint press conference, his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelati, said the two men underlined their countries’ “solidarity with the state and people of Lebanon.”
The Israeli military, after weakening the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas during a devastating offensive launched in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the October 7, 2023 attack, shifted the bulk of its operations to Lebanon in mid-September against Hezbollah.
Israel’s military wants to drive the Lebanese Islamist movement, an ally of Hamas, from border areas in southern Lebanon and stop Hezbollah’s rocket fire into northern Israel to allow the return of nearly 60,000 displaced residents.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today threatened Lebanon that it will experience “disasters and suffering like” Gaza experienced.
After “a year of devastation” in the Palestinian territory and “escalation in the West Bank”, a territory occupied by Israel since 1967 that has seen an escalation of violence in the context of the war in Gaza, Israel is now “dragging” the region towards a totalitarian regional war,” Safadi charged.
In 1994, Jordan became the second Arab state, after Egypt, to sign a peace treaty with Israel.
Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, Cairo has played the role of negotiator between Israel and Hamas, despite the fact that its efforts like those of Qatar and the United States have repeatedly failed to negotiate a truce.
