Egypt.. 3 police officers were killed in an attack on a security checkpoint in Ismailia

On Friday, 3 police officers were killed in an attack on a security checkpoint in Ismailia, Egypt, medical and security sources told AFP.

Security sources said two cars approached the security checkpoint in the residential neighborhood of Al-Salam, from which two people got out, each with an automatic weapon.

Security sources believe the attack is a “terrorist act”, the first of its kind in an Egyptian city in several years, with the exception of North Sinai.

A security source said the attack left 16 people injured.

For its part, Egypt’s “Extra News” channel said on Friday that an attempt to target a security force near the Al-Salihin mosque in Ismailia, in the country’s northeast, had been rejected.

The channel indicated that one of the elements carrying out the attack was killed.

And Egyptian media reported that the interior ministry had tightened security measures in Ismailia after the ambush attack and declared a state of security alert.

Security forces combed the area for the rest of the escaped perpetrators in the adjacent desert areas, while the governorate’s entrances and exits were closed.

Last May, 11 soldiers were killed in an attack in West Sinai.
