Astronomical increases in the price of the Egnatia Road tolls are coming in a three-year horizon, due to the concession of the road axis to a private person.
From 0.03 euros/kilometer, the amount of tolls will initially increase to 0.04 euros, reaching 0.065 euros in a three-year horizon, recording an increase of 120%, according to “Avgi”. At the same time, the immediate abolition of free transport is expected for the local communities (Thesprotia, Ioannina, Xanthi, Rodopi, Evros) and also for the unemployed who use Egnatia, as complained by the Association of Employees in Egnatia Odos S.A.
The workers also complain that the contract in question moves in the context of the rest, that is to the detriment of the State for the compensations in favor of private individuals.
“Although the Covid19 pandemic was ongoing before the completion of the drafting of the terms of the Egnatia Road concession contract and also the issues arising from the excessive compensations in the other concession contracts were known, no care was taken in the contract to protect the financial interests of the State, as a result of which the Egnatia Road concessionaire is also provided with huge compensation rights in any corresponding situation concerning the protection of public health”is typically noted.
