The main reason for the price increase is the rising costs for laying hen farmers. “Due to the war in Ukraine, not only our energy costs, but above all the costs of feed have increased enormously and this weighs heavily on our farms,” explains Vaneynde, who also runs a laying hens farm. If entrepreneurs are to survive, they often have no choice but to pass on those costs.
The offer is also limited at the moment. Earlier this year, many companies decided to release fewer hens. They did so due to uncertainty about current agricultural policy and low prices in recent years. Finally, there has also been global avian flu for months, which has caused the death of many laying hens, including in Flanders.
