Egbert Lachaert not happy with documentary about El Kaouakibi: “Incomprehensible that VRT spends tax money on someone who deceived everyone”

The story of El Kaouakibi is well known. She was praised as a ‘white rabbit’ as a social entrepreneur, and worked on a political career through Open Vld. The mood changed when it became known that the accounts of her non-profit organizations, including dance project Let’s Go Urban, had been tampered with and that she had used subsidy money for personal purposes.

The legal investigation into forgery, accounting errors, subsidy fraud, misuse of corporate assets and misuse of trust at Let’s Go Urban is still ongoing.

The report about 35-year-old El Kaouakibi, who has been avoiding public for months, will be shown on One. There is no broadcast date yet. Since the outbreak of the problems with ‘Let’s Go Urban’, Goens was the only reporter who received permission from the entrepreneur/politician to follow her and to interview her at important times and events.

Open Vld chairman Egbert Lachaert is not happy about the plans. In the spring, the party started the procedure to expel El Kaouakibi from the party, after which the Flemish MP herself took the decision to hand in her party card. “Incomprehensible that the public broadcaster spends tax money on someone who deceived everyone. Why spend money to offer a forum here?” Lachaert said in a comment on Twitter. “In this file, the court must above all be able to do its job asap, with the appropriate consequences,” said the Open Vld chairman.

El Kaouakibi has been at home on sick leave for months since she said goodbye to Open Vld in the Flemish Parliament and has been sitting as an independent representative of the people.
