EFSA wants to be able to test the risk of Parkinson’s in pesticides


The European Food Safety Authority EFSA wants to expand its advice on the authorization of pesticides and to gain a better understanding of possible links between active substances in products and the development of Parkinson’s disease. EFSA reached this decision at a recent conference on the effects of pesticides on the neurological system, reports from the meeting show.

There is growing concern among scientists and physicians about the possible effects of pesticides on the development of Parkinson’s disease. Several epidemiological studies show that this brain disease is more common among farmers and in areas with intensive cultivation.

Pesticides are not sufficiently tested upon admission for a possible link with the disease, the EFSA acknowledges. The European organization that issues scientific advice on the authorization of pesticides is giving scientists an assignment this year to develop a method for testing the relationship between pesticides and Parkinson’s disease.
