Efforts to Control Monkey Pox Cases Strengthened by Indonesia’s Ministry of Health

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) of the Republic of Indonesia has strengthened efforts to control cases of Monkey Pox (Mpox) in this country through a series of actions that include surveillance, therapeutics, vaccination and risk communication.

This was done in response to seven active cases of Monkey Pox, all of which were found in DKI Jakarta.

The Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, explained that surveillance is an important step in controlling the spread of Monkey Pox disease. This involves epidemiological investigations of confirmed cases to trace close contacts and determine the source of infection.

Another form of surveillance is preparing a reference laboratory to confirm Monkey Pox cases and carry out sequencing.

“We also routinely coordinate with the Health Service, community health centers and hospitals, and utilize recording and reporting via NAR Mpox,” he said Monday (23/10/2023).

Therapeutic efforts and vaccination are also the focus in treating Monkey Pox. This involves preparing logistics for medicines, treatment, monitoring case isolation, and piloting vaccinations among at-risk groups, including health workers and close contacts.

The Ministry of Health also pays serious attention to risk communication. They have sent an alert circular to all health officials in the region and provided notification to the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding confirmed cases. Apart from that, they disseminate information through communication media such as FAQs and short videos.

The Ministry of Health is also actively collecting global and regional information through official information portals that are considered valid, and they regularly share developments with relevant stakeholders.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has confirmed that there are seven active cases of Monkey Pox in DKI Jakarta. Although there is one case with a history of overseas travel, all of them are cases of local transmission. This intensive effort confirms the Ministry of Health’s commitment to controlling the spread of Monkey Pox and protecting the health of the Indonesian people.
