TIMESINDONESIA, BANYUWANGI – Although in the district which is located at the easternmost tip of Java Island, no animals with Rabies status or commonly known as mad dogs have been found, the Banyuwangi Regency Government (Pemkab) through the local Agriculture and Food Service (Dispertan), is taking quick steps to anticipate Rabies so it doesn’t spread wider.
As an effort to dispel Rabies, the Agriculture Office continues to monitor the disease (surveillance), outreach to the community and administering vaccines to a number of animals that are susceptible to mad dogs.
“We have prepared 1,500 vaccines from the central government for Rabies,” said the Daily Executive (Plh) Head of the Banyuwangi District Agriculture Office, Drh. Nanang Sugiharto, Wednesday (12/7/2023).
Please note, Rabies is a zoonotic type of disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans and is included in the category of acute infectious diseases. In general, this virus is transmitted through saliva, bites or scratches and licks on broken skin by animals infected with rabies.
The main animals as the spread of rabies include dogs, bats, cats, monkeys and so on. Mad dog disease is a disease that is included in the acute category, which can attack the central nervous system caused by Lyssavirus.
Nanang added, seeing the impact caused by the Rabies disease, his party is boosting vaccinations for Rabies Carrier Animals (HPR) in several sub-districts of Bumi Blambangan which are considered vulnerable to the Mad Dog disease.
“Yesterday we started from Rogojampi District, Tegaldlimo. Later it will also be continued in Muncar, Purwoharjo and Pesanggaran to several areas around forest areas such as Kalibaru and Glenmore,” he explained.
Not only that, the Banyuwangi Agriculture Office has also increased supervision at places that are the entry points for animals on Blambangan Land, such as at the Ketapang port, traditional ports and so on which are used for animal traffic.
“We also keep an eye on places that are pockets of animal traffic,” he said.
On this occasion, the Department of Agriculture focused on administering Rabies vaccines to animals released by their owners.
“For now the vaccine is targeted at animals that have owners, but are released into the wild,” he said.
The plan, to simplify the vaccination system against HPR, will carry it out every September.
“We use September to make it easier for us to vaccinate once a year against HPR. In September, we will focus on animals kept at home,” he explained.
The Department of Agriculture asked the people of Banyuwangi to immediately carry out Rabies vaccinations for free through officers in the field and the nearest animal health centers.
“This vaccination is very important and is done once a year,” he added.
