Effects of the morning after pill on the female body

MEXICO.- The morning after pill is a state-of-the-art emergency contraception, which is used to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

According to Dr. Jorge Luis Paredes, Gynecologist at the Oncogyn Clinic, this pill is used within a period of 72 hours after having sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy.

This contraceptive prohibits ovulation when in the middle of the cycle, making it difficult for the sperm to reach the ovum, altering the motility of the fallopian tube. The pill reduces the thickness of the endometrium, complicating the adherence of the fertilized eggs to it.

The pill contains hormones that prevent pregnancy when you have sex without some kind of condom.

However the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) points out that the use of these pills is not recommended routinely, for this there are more effective methods.

“Its continuous use is not recommended because, compared to other methods, it is less effective and side effects are more frequent,” it reads on its website.

The health agency reports that this contraceptive should never be given if you have a confirmed pregnancy because it will no longer work. However, it is estimated that neither the pregnant woman nor the fetus is in danger if it is taken inadvertently in early pregnancy or if the method fails

“If it is taken before 24 hours, the effectiveness is around 90%. After more than 72 hours, the effectiveness decreases to 75% (since these compounds do not act after fertilization has been carried out)”.

“The effectiveness is greater as long as it is used as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse,” reports the IMSS.

The IMSS emphasizes that women with porphyria (severe liver and blood disease) should ingest it with great caution.
