The trials were carried out at the La Libertad Experimental Center, on a medium terrace soil, with a clayey texture, acidic and low in organic matter, P and K. Cowpea of the ICA-Menegua variety was planted in one plot and rice without rotation in another. After 60 days, the dry forage produced by the legume was weighed and analyzed by incorporating it into the soil. After one month, CICA-8 rice was planted in each mentioned plot and N was applied at different rates in the form of urea. The N content in the foliage was analyzed, the percentage of leaf stripping during harvest and the yield of paddy rice were determined. The incorporation of dry forage produced by cowpea restored considerable amounts of N, K, Ca, P and Mg to the soil. The cowpea-rice system presented a higher concentration of N in the rice foliage, a significant decrease in the percentage of leaf stripping and a significant increase in paddy rice yield. Nitrogen fertilization presented a significant increase in plant height, yields and N concentration in the foliage. From the results obtained, cowpea can be considered suitable as a rotation crop and as a green manure due to its satisfactory performance in soils suitable for sowing irrigated rice Rice-Oryza sativa 2018-09-08T17:21:33Z 2018-09-08T17:21:33Z 1983 article Scientific article info:eu-repo/semantics/article 1173 reponame:Biblioteca Digital Agropecuaria de Colombia repourl: instname:Corporación colombiana de Investigación agropecuaria AGROSAVIA spa Revista ICA 3 159 166 Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Full text access info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess application/pdf application/pdf Villavicencio Colombia Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario Bogotá (Colombia) Revista ICA; Vol. 18, No. 3 (1983): ICA Journal (September); p.159-166

Effects of rotation and incorporation of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) on irrigated rice production in the Eastern Plains.
description

The effects of using this legume as a green manure and rotation crop, and nitrogen fertilization on crop yield were studied. The trials were carried out at the La Libertad Experimental Center, on a medium-terrace soil, with a clayey texture, acidic and low in organic matter, P and K. Cowpea of the ICA-Menegua variety was sown in one plot, and rice in another without rotation. After 60 days, the dry forage produced by the legume was weighed and analyzed by incorporating it into the soil. After one month, CICA-8 rice was sown in each plot mentioned, and N was applied at different doses in the form of urea. The N content in the foliage was analyzed, the percentage of thinning during harvest and the yield of paddy rice were determined. The incorporation of the dry forage produced by the cowpea restored considerable amounts of N, K, Ca, P and Mg to the soil. The cowpea-rice system showed a higher concentration of N in the rice foliage, a significant decrease in the percentage of leaf break and a significant increase in paddy rice yield. Nitrogen fertilization showed a significant increase in plant height, yields and N concentration in the foliage. Based on the results obtained, cowpea can be considered suitable as a rotation crop and as a green manure due to its satisfactory performance in soils suitable for sowing irrigated rice.
