Effects and Duration of SARS-CoV-2 Vaccines | Chile’s Vaccination Strategy and Variant Protection

According to experts, immunizers for SARS-CoV-2 have a maximum protection period of six months and from there they begin to decline until their effects disappear and leave people exposed to the infection.

In October 2022, Chile began the application of a bivalent vaccine aimed at the elderly population, immunosuppressed patients, and health sector workers.

The Undersecretary of Public Health, Andrea Albagli, reported that precisely these groups will be the first objective while awaiting a decision from the Advisory Council on Vaccines and Immunization Strategies regarding the other prioritized sectors for 2024.

Chile is negotiating the purchase of preparations that, in addition to protecting against the initial strain of the coronavirus, are also effective against the most recent variant, called XBB.1.5, detected a few months ago in the country.

The South American nation has been going through a spike in infections in recent weeks and the authorities warned that this situation could spread and urged the population to take precautions, such as wearing a mask in crowded places.
