Machines and materials have been housed on the B 296 in Stammheimer Feld for around four months. Cameras are supposed to prevent something from getting away there. With success?

“On Germany’s construction sites, opportunistic thieves and professional gangs stop at nothing. The criminal gangs prefer to use the silence of the night and thus cause damage of around 20 million euros a year.” This is what BauWatch Projekt Service GmbH writes On your webpage. Among other things, the company provides safety products for construction sites – also in Calw.
Here, the GmbH uses video technology to monitor the storage area for building materials, equipment and machines for the construction of the Hesse railway. This was laid out in mid-April on federal highway 296 in Calw, directly at the exit to Stammheimer Feld, opposite the Köpf construction center.
Otherwise no suitable areas
While it initially looked like a major construction project was going to take place here, Calw’s mayor, Florian Kling, told our editorial team at the time that only a gravel bed and an asphalt driveway would be created there – so to speak, so that the material does not sink into the mud. The reason why the whole thing was necessary at all is simple: because there are no other suitable storage areas near the construction sites.
And this square, reports Janina Dinkelaker, spokeswoman for the district office, is now “completely monitored by video as a precaution”. The measure appears to be having an effect. Because: “So far, there has been no rioting and nothing has been stolen,” explains the spokeswoman.
Seven million alarms per year
Not a matter of course. According to a study by Board of Trustees for Traffic Safety, an Austrian non-profit organization, 90 percent of the companies surveyed had themselves become victims of theft on construction sites, reports “BauWatch”. According to its own statements, “BauWatch” registers around seven million alarms per year.
There have also been incidents in the Calw district; in the spring of 2021, for example, heavy construction equipment was lost on the first night after a construction site was set up between Althengstett and Ostelsheim. Here, however, was also built for the Hesse Railway – namely an alternative quarters for bats.
