High cholesterol can be treated with lifestyle changes, such as reducing saturated fat foods, exercising regularly, and maintaining an ideal body weight.
However, if these lifestyle changes are not able to treat your high cholesterol, your doctor may prescribe medication, including:
1. The statin drug class, such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, fluvastatin, and lovastatin. This drug works by inhibiting the liver from producing cholesterol.
2. Ezetimibe, which works by limiting the absorption of cholesterol from the food you consume.
3. Class of bile acid sequestrant drugs. This drug works by converting cholesterol into bile acids.
Apart from taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, you are also advised to have regular blood tests. The purpose of this test is to monitor cholesterol levels as well as find out the symptoms of high cholesterol that you may experience.
