Infectious disease specialist Francisco Márquez Díaz said that a very important step is about to be taken in the treatment of Covid-19 and its complications, after COFEPRIS released the use and commercialization of a new first-generation drug that is indicated for people with a higher risk of developing the disease.
He mentioned that the drug, called Paxlovid and manufactured in Switzerland, will be of great help in inhibiting the symptomatic symptoms of coronavirus in the early stages in vulnerable, high-risk or very symptomatic people.
The antiviral with inhibitors of an enzyme that breaks protein bonds will be very useful because it has been proven to prevent hospitalizations and significantly reduce mortality due to Covid-19, with Mexico being one of the first countries to authorize the use of this medication after knowing the results that guarantee its use in the treatment of the disease, especially in older adults.
ANTIVIRAL FOR SEVERE CASES
The specialist in the treatment of infectious-contagious diseases explained that the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks authorized the sanitary registration of the new drug manufactured by the Pfizer laboratory and that it is one of the specialized drugs indicated for the treatment of coronavirus in adults who do not require supplemental oxygen and who have a higher risk of progression of severe Covid-19.
Likewise, and after pointing out that the new drug has conclusively proven its effectiveness and that it will even be very useful against the new variants and subvariants of Covid-19 that are appearing, Dr. Márquez asserted that the results of the technical analysis of the drug determine that Paxlovid meets all the requirements of quality, safety and efficacy, which is why the marketing and open use of the drug was authorized in severe cases.
EFFECTIVE MEDICINE
The new drug is an antiviral with inhibitors of the protease of the virus that causes Covid, and has already been approved by other regulatory institutions, such as the United States Food and Drug Administration, Health Canada and the European Medicines Agency, which gives full guarantee on its use and effectiveness in treatment.
Finally, the specialist stressed that the authorization for the use of the new antiviral drug will allow Mexico to continue making significant progress in the fight against Covid-19.
