It’s been 12 days since the explosion at a pyrotechnics warehouse in Elin Pelin, but residents say they continue to hear rumblings in the evening.
It was on Monday partial state of emergency lifted. Investigations at the scene of the accident are ongoing.
During the day, there were police and fire departments in the area of the blasts. More than 10 days after the explosions, the perimeter around the warehouse remains cordoned off.
“At night it sounds and smells very strange – maybe some chemicals, some kind of mixture. When the wind blows and it starts to thunder again.
No one says anything, every miracle in three days. No one is talking, no police are passing by, maybe it has quieted down for them, but we are not calm yet,” says Karina.
The woman’s home was among those damaged in the July 25 blasts.
“The damage is to the terrace – it is a thick glass unit, the inner part is broken. They collected documents, there was a signature. I hope everything will be fine soon,” the woman told bTV.
Karina says that they always feared that such an incident might happen because the warehouse was too close and they often heard the boom of pyrotechnics in the area.
“The concerns of the people of Elin Pelin Station are well-founded,” says the mayor of the municipality, Ivaylo Simeonov.
“The most important thing is to reconsider how far from the populated areas such facilities should be. If the wind had not been from the west, the damage would have been extremely severe,” he points out.
“The damage assessment for compensation has been completed and the funds are expected to be paid out by the end of August. For this purpose, an extraordinary municipal council was convened on August 22,” explained the mayor of Elin Pelin.
The 48-year-old associate professor Petar Shishkov and his 20-year-old daughter Christina were injured. They were transported to Pirogov, where they later died.
The other two victims were found during searches of the warehouses. These are 22-year-old Teodor Popov, who is the son of the owner of the warehouses, and a 60-year-old man.
The investigation is ongoing.
