“EELV – Côte-d’Or supports the multiplicity of actions calling for priority action in the face of climate change”, declare the environmental activists.
Press release from Europe Ecology Côte-d’Or of August 21, 2023:
Seven Extinction Rebellion activists were sentenced on August 16 by the Dijon criminal court to a suspended fine for having sprayed paint on BNP Paribas ATMs.
This action was notably motivated by the bank’s enormous investments in the extraction of fossil fuels, particularly in Uganda, which are accelerating climate change.
EELV – Côte-d’Or reaffirms its attachment to respect for the law and non-violence, but notes that these “punches” actions place the realities of polluting industries in the spotlight, their headlong rush in the climaticidal activities, to the detriment of biodiversity and populations. These militant actions are combined – in substance – with what we are carrying out in terms of public policies for the climate, solidarity and democracy.
We recall that it is the responsibility of the State to guarantee the application of the Paris agreements on the climate of 2015. Unfortunately, for more than eight years we have been witnessing – in this matter – an incredible policy of the ostrich and procrastination, even though we know today that national, European and planetary mobilizations can be organized to deal with emergencies, such as in 2020 with the pandemic caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus . What was possible three years ago must be even more so when it comes to the climate and more broadly to life on earth.
Worse still, we are witnessing the government’s desire to criminalize environmental struggles with a lot of police custody and searches of the homes of activists, while justice has finally reclassified the facts as simple tickets.
On August 11, in its decision on the suspension of the decree dissolving the land uprisings, the Council of State recalled that it is essential for the government, the multinationals and any other interested entity to concentrate efforts on the energy transition and the real limitation of greenhouse gases while all the climate change indicators have turned red and even more severely than the most pessimistic scenarios had predicted.
As a reminder, the month of July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth, at the same time the melting of the ice intensified well beyond the forecasts of the IPCC in its last report and the temperatures recorded in recent days in the Near East and Middle East (over 50°C) force us to rethink our society in order to adapt urgently.
There is still time to react and it is in responsibility that EELV – Côte-d’Or supports the multiplicity of actions calling for priority action for energy change, biodiversity, the fight against waste and solidarity. In addition, we call on all public and private actors not to forget the climate emergency and the need to react without delay in order to reverse the trend.
