Edwin Evers had one condition for a return to Radio 538. The DJ wanted to have complete free rein in setting up his new show.
“My only condition was that I would be given carte blanche,” says 52-year-old Evers in conversation with the ANP. “I have stopped doing the morning show for five years now. All that time it was in the back of my mind that if I returned to the radio, it would be on Friday afternoon between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m..”
So when 538 director Dave Minneboo called last year to ask if Evers wanted to do the Friday afternoon, the decision was quickly made. “I thought: if I don’t do it now, I will never do it again. So this was really the moment.”
Friday afternoon can also be easily combined with the life that the DJ and musician has built up since quitting the morning show. “In recent years I have made a lot of music and performed with the band, but of course I have also done things that I could not do years before, such as going out for dinner, going to a birthday or meeting with friends. I could not do all that, because I was always concerned about I was already in bed by 8 p.m. I now have a completely different life, and I would like to keep it that way. With one day of radio a week, that is easy.”
In the new Evers & co. Evers, together with sidekick Cobus Bosscha and newsreader Henk Blok, starts the weekend. “Cobus was already involved in the morning show as a producer and sidekick when we were still at 3FM. He left three years after we went to 538, but we have always kept in touch. A real radio man, a creative guest,” says Evers. “And I wanted Henk there because he can read well, has a good sense of the atmosphere and is simply a pleasant person.”
Evers wants to “show something really different on Friday afternoon. Of course some Top 40 music, but also a lot of live music and also some older music. Although I am of course not going to deviate completely from the 538 format.”
