Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards will not continue at the club next season.
He confirms this in a long and emotional post club websites.
– Being part of this club for ten years has been a privilege because of the people I have been so lucky to work with and the success we have had, Edwards writes.

Replacement ready
Assistant Sports Director Julian Ward will be promoted and take over the job at Edwards after the season. He is praised by the outgoing sports director.
– I think it is entirely appropriate that the person who takes over after me is Julian Ward. Julian has built up the skills for this role for many years, and there are countless elements in his development that can be highlighted, none more so than the unique work he did in setting up our loan department six years ago, Edwards writes.
Having worked at the club since 2011, Edwards took over as sporting director in 2016. Since then, he has helped build the best Liverpool team in a number of years.
In addition to bringing in players such as Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah, Edwards has also made a significant contribution to bringing home the trophy in the Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup and World Cup for club teams.
– It is of course disappointing to lose such a talented person as Michael, but we respect his desire for new challenges, writes Mike Gordon from Fenway Sports Group in a press release.

Rejects Newcastle rumors
Liverpool Echo claimed on Tuesday that Newcastle and their new manager Eddie Howe are interested in Edwards’ services.
The Athletic journalist James Pearce dismisses the rumors on Twitter.
– I understand that Michael Edwards’ next destination will definitely not be Newcastle – despite recent speculation. That job is not of interest to him, Pearce writes.
The German club Red Bull Leipzig has also been linked with the Englishman, but Leipzig boss Oliver Mintzlaff quickly dismissed these rumors.
– Michael Edwards will not be our sports director. We are looking for a sports director who fits our club, our philosophy and the direction we want to go in, Mitzlaff is said to have told DAZN.
