Edward Sturing Signs Contract as Vitesse’s Trainer Until End of Season Amidst Sporting and Financial Concerns

Edward Sturing will also be on the bench as Vitesse’s trainer after the winter break. The Apeldoorn has signed a contract with the bottom of the Eredivisie until the end of the season.

Sturing was initially appointed as interim trainer. He took over the duties of Phillip Cocu, who decided to resign in November. Sturing’s contract now runs until July 1, 2024.

Thanks to the new contract, Sturing can once again stand on his own two feet at Vitesse. He was interim coach at the club no fewer than seven times. In 2003 he was allowed to stay longer. Then he remained head coach until 2006.

Under the leadership of Sturing, mixed results were achieved in the last matches. They lost by a large margin to Go Ahead Eagles (5-1) and Almere City (5-0), but they also won against Heracles Almelo (2-0) and sc Heerenveen (1-0 in the cup).

“I work day and night with the club and the team. That has a big impact, but I want to help Vitesse,” says Sturing. “It is important that we get out of the valley and continue to recover in the second half of the season. Together with the team we will do our utmost.”

Sporting and financial concerns for Vitesse

In addition to the sixty-year-old Sturing, his assistants Nicky Hofs and Tim Cornelisse have also extended their contracts until the summer of next year. The trio must protect Vitesse from relegation from the Eredivisie.

Vitesse is at the bottom of the competition. The 2017 cup winner won three of the first sixteen games this season. The gap to Heracles Almelo, which is in the safe fifteenth place, is four points.

“The situation we are in demands a lot from a trainer,” says technical director Benjamin Schmedes. “It is commendable that Edward remains on board and he wants to do everything he can to get Vitesse to a higher place in the rankings in the second half of the season.”

In addition to the sporting concerns, there are also financial concerns in Arnhem. Vitesse hopes for a takeover by American businessman Coley Parry, but has been waiting for approval from the KNVB for more than a year.
