The first solo exhibition of Edward Hopper, an American national painter who portrays the solitude of modern people, was held in Korea.
From daily life in the city with a sense of desolation to landscapes of travel destinations, you can look at a variety of works expressed in light and shadow over 65 years.
This is reporter Lee Gyo-jun’s report.

A signal tower and a dark green hill next to a railroad track at sunset.
The railroad seems to touch the unknown along the horizon.
The interior with lights turned on and the darkness outside the window, the desolation of the city where time and communication are cut off hangs.
About 160 pieces of Edward Hopper’s works, which represent American contemporary art, visited Korea.
Hopper is highly praised for capturing the daily life of a city that can be overlooked and expressing the emotions of modern people in the early 20th century with light and shadow.
His work, which transcends reality and fantasy by infusing imagination into observation and memory, had a great influence on the art world, such as pop art, as well as the greats of the film industry, such as Hitchcock.
This exhibition, co-planned by the Seoul Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, provides a glimpse into the history of the world of art, following the artist’s lifelong journey to places that inspired him, such as Paris, New York, and New England.

There are many works that show not only the inner emotions of city dwellers, such as solitude and alienation, but also the artistic communion they share with nature in the seaside and rural areas.
There is also a space where you can reconfirm the traces of Josephine Hopper, who was a lifelong companion and supporter, including ‘Woman in the Sunshine’, in which his wife appeared as a model.
About 110 archival materials such as illustrations and photos were displayed, but only the sketches of the representative work ‘People Who Stay Up All Night’ were displayed, which is somewhat disappointing.
Attention is focusing on whether it will surpass the 300,000 box office record set by the 2019 David Hockney exhibition set by the Seoul Museum of Art.
