Edward Enninful’s Final ‘Vogue’ Cover with 40 Legendary Women Sparks Controversy

CelebritiesThe new cover of the British ‘Vogue’, the last under the leadership of editor-in-chief Edward Enninful (51), is perhaps the most striking in a long time. The ‘legendary’ cover features a total of 40 famous and successful women. Surprising detail: the women flew from all over the world to be in front of the camera at the same time.

The cover, titled ‘Legends Only’, features 40 women from the music, TV, film and fashion worlds, ranging from Jane Fonda to Enninful’s first-ever cover star Adowa Aboah, model Naomi Campbell and singer Miley Cyrus. Oprah Winfrey sits in the center of the photo, next to tennis player Serena Williams and former Spice Girl and fashion designer Victoria Beckham. ‌There are two mother-and-daughter combinations in the photo: models Kate and Lila Moss, and Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber.

End of an era

“The end of an era”, is how ‘Vogue’ describes the latest cover of Enninful. “After 6.5 years and 153 cover stars – including the 40 legendary women photographed together in New York for our March 2024 issue – see Edward Enninful’s 76th and final edition of ‘Vogue’.” The British magazine calls the meeting of the women a ‘unique photo shoot’.

The cover may be quite unique, but some criticism has already surfaced on social media. Many people find it unacceptable that Lila Moss and Kaia Gerber were selected as 2 of the 40 “legendary women”. Many accuse the magazine of nepotism. “What are Kate and Cindy’s daughters doing here??? Are they legends too??? Absolutely not!!!”, “The greatest talents from the fashion world and then you have one person who is simply the daughter of a supermodel and doesn’t do much else” and “Lila Moss and Kaia Gerber on the cover instead of Bella Hadid… Scandalous,” are just a few of the many displeased reactions.

One day, one studio

When the original idea for the cover was conceived, there was only one question: Would 40 of the most booked women in the world actually go to one studio in Manhattan on one day in December to take one photo together? “Spoiler alert: they came,” writes ‘Vogue’. “From London, New York, Paris, Milan and LA.”

Edward Enninful, the magazine’s first black, gay editor-in-chief in 2017, announced in June last year that he would be taking a few steps back. He will remain involved as a creative and cultural advisor, but will now focus more on growing the ‘Vogue’ brand globally. The Ghanaian-Briton has been working for Condé Nast, the publisher behind ‘Vogue’, for more than 25 years. In December 2020, he was also appointed European editor-in-chief and is often tipped as Anna Wintour’s future successor. Wintour is the world-famous editor-in-chief of American Vogue.

Setbacks

In the editorial of the magazine, Enninful writes that he faced setbacks when he set himself the goal of “changing things” and improving diversity in the magazines. He remembers that during his initial period in 2017, he was brainstorming his first plans and a colleague told him that diversity would not go down well. “I was of course shocked by that (…) Were people really that close minded?” he writes.

Under Enninful’s leadership, a lot of diverse and inspiring covers were ultimately made. For example, his very first cover featured Adwoa Aboah, a black model and activist. In 2019, Laverne Cox was the very first trans person on the cover of ‘Vogue’ and in 2020 Judi Dench became the first person over 80 to star on the cover of the magazine. In addition, Enninful was responsible for many more famous covers, such as Rihanna with her child in 2023, Beyonce on a stallion in 2021 and child rights activist Malala in 2021.

Enough to be proud of, and that is Enninful too. “It was an extraordinary ride and an absolute honor,” he wrote. “I have enjoyed my time here and am proud that important work has been done.”
