Edvin Anger went to the final after a Swedish protest.

He then took his second career podium.

– It means a lot to me, says the Swede to Sportbladet.

The men’s sprint was a shocker for Sweden.

Edvin Anger, 21, and Johan Häggström, 31, were the only blue-and-yellow riders to advance from the qualifier.

Both made it to the semi-finals, but there it seemed to be over at first.

After a tangled situation at the riot, Häggström fell. He tied with Frenchman Lucas Chanavat and missed the final.

Protested: “Unauthorized maneuver”

The incident prompted Sweden to file a protest against the Frenchman’s actions.

It went through, Chanavat was placed last in the semi-finals – and his final spot went to Edvin Anger.

Once there, the Swede finished third. He finished behind the Norwegians Johannes Höfslot Kläbo, who won, and Erik Valnes.

Thought he went out

This was Anger’s second podium in the World Cup.

– I am extremely satisfied. But I’m also a little upset that I didn’t try to go harder in the last corner, he says.

Anger admits that things got messy in connection with the Swedish protest.

– I was determined that I went out. Then I heard “Häggas” say that he had been killed. Then I asked if one could do as the Frenchman did. You can hardly profit from pushing someone, says Anger.

You told the leaders to look into it?

– I thought it sounded strange. But it was more “Häggas” who reacted to the situation and I just agreed.

Häggström: “We shook hands”

“Häggas”, i.e. Johan Häggström, was frustrated afterwards.

– Sad not to get the chance in the semis. I was there and fought for it but then I got hooked on Chanavat. I would have liked to have had a pure riot, he says.

Häggström and Chanvat talked about the situation afterwards.

– We shook hands. There were no ill intentions from either side. Both will be affected in the end.

Calle Halfvarsson, Marcus Grate and Gustaf Berglund went out in the qualifiers.
