Wanne-Süd became more colorful in just one day: at the same time bushes and trees were planted in an elementary school, a kindergarten, a parish and the welfare organization of workers for a snack. The planting campaign was the highlight of the jointly developed education and planting project Essbares Quartier Wanne-Süd.
The Freiherr vom Stein elementary school was set up in the lawn between the gymnasium and the canteen, in the lawn in front of the St. Elisabeth Group kindergarten, in front of the two entrances of the residential complex for the elderly and workers’ welfare meeting place, and in the ‘area in front of the rectory of the parish of St. Christopher Wanne-Eickel.
Education-Sustainability-Community
The project was coordinated by Barbara Kruse of the city’s education office as part of the Education-Sustainability-Municipality federal model project. Expert advice was provided by Dr. Richard Wagner. It is financed with funds from the district fund for the disposal of the social city of Wanne-Süd. The Arbeiterwohlfahrt, as a formal applicant for the alliance, invited to their meeting place to exchange ideas and accompany the planting campaign.
Insects and birds were also considered, and plants that attract animals were deliberately selected. In kindergartens and schools, research has been and is being done in parallel on the theme of insects. Biologist Ingrid Reckmeier from BUND gives children a clear understanding of wild bees and conveys the importance of plant pollination.
