The responsibility to prepare future generations for the challenges of a rapidly changing world requires a wide range of education. At a time when around 50 percent of a generation decides to study, the university plays an important role in the education of the population.

At the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), the training of future teachers is very important. Tomorrow’s teachers are being prepared for their work in schools. The President’s speech series in the winter semester 2024/25 is therefore under the motto “Education with the future – future through education”.

Due to the challenges posed by crises such as pandemics, wars and conflicts, migration and climate change, it is important not only to train students professionally, but also to strengthen them in their social and ethical responsibility. The focus is on topics such as sustainability, multi-professional collaboration and social equality.

But it is also necessary to take into account threats to democracy, for example from the political radicalization of the right. A wide range of topics will be discussed by experts and the interested public as part of the President’s speech series.

The JLU is aware of its social responsibility. It prepares young people to actively shape their future – or rather, futures. We usually talk about the future because it is not yet clear what the future will look like in Germany, in Europe, globally and on a planetary scale. Instead, today’s students will be tasked with shaping these futures in a way that matches their values and ideals, so that the next generation will also have a world worth living in. . The world is changing: Today we have new technologies such as artificial intelligence and international learning and teaching methods available. These developments are changing both society’s view of universities and their opportunities. The aim of the lecture series is to understand the shape of the future as an opportunity and to shape university education in the future and the future through education.
