Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) – Thirteen cases of anti-Semitic discrimination have been reported to the state school authorities in Hesse in the past two and a half years. This was announced by Minister of Culture Alexander Lorz (CDU) in response to a small request from the FDP parliamentary group in Wiesbaden. Most cases, each with three anti-Semitic incidents, have been registered since May 2018 by the education authority for the Rheingau-Taunus district and the state capital Wiesbaden as well as the education authority for the district of Gießen and the Vogelsberg district.
If the incident is criminally relevant, it will be reported to the Minister of Education. In any case, there is an internal work-up with educational measures. If necessary, a specialized advice center could also be called in, said the CDU politician.
In 2019, the state started the anti-Semitism prevention project at Hessian schools. The Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Anne Frank Educational Center are thus offering a prevention, intervention and counseling program aimed at making young people aware of the dangers of anti-Semitism. In cases of conflict with an anti-Semitic background, help is offered through the program, and teachers are supported in preventing anti-Semitism in the school context.
According to the minister of education, 1,386 students and 415 teachers have so far participated in the workshops and training courses as part of the anti-Semitism prevention project at Hessian schools.
