TIROL. The Council of Ministers recently passed a resolution on higher vocational education. Above all, the dual training will benefit from this, as e WK President Christoph Walser explains.
What does the decision on higher vocational education mean?
The decision of the Council of Ministers on higher vocational education paves the way for a higher qualification that is seamlessly connected to the apprenticeship and is at the same time part of the job, without having to take the detour via the academic system, as has been the case up to now. Vocational training paths can thus be classified as equivalent to an academic degree.
Austria follows the example of Switzerland and Germany.
New perspectives for vocational training
So far it has only been possible in around half of the apprenticeships to obtain a formal higher qualification in the form of a Master or proficiency exam to get. There are only limited further training opportunities for apprenticeship graduates. You can, for example, take advantage of corresponding offers in the university sector. Otherwise, numerous courses are available, but they have so far been difficult to classify formally.
In the future, however, higher qualifications will also be possible without switching to a university and without interrupting your professional activity.
“Now it is important to implement the decision quickly in order to create a wide range of new offers.”
explains the Apprentice coordinator of WK Tirol, David Narr.
Consistent vocational training
Higher vocational education is on an equal footing with academic education. This means nothing other than that the extra-occupational practical career ladder will receive additional rungs. On the one hand, this closes a gap that currently exists between the final apprenticeship examination (Level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework NQF) and the master craftsman examination (NQF Level 6) or the proficiency test. On the other hand, it will be possible to acquire professional qualifications up to the last level of the NQF (level 8) and thus qualify for managerial tasks in the economy. In total, this creates a integrated vocational training systemwhich also takes into account the principle of lifelong learning.
