Education. [Vidéo] The Césars adventure for the Cernay building high school

At the 46th Caesars ceremony , which took place on March 12, a new category has emerged: the César for high school students. An award that has actually existed since 2019, but which had never been awarded during the ceremony. The César des lycéens allows 2,000 students in Terminale in general, technological and vocational lycées to distinguish one of the films nominated in the “best film” category. A trophy set up by the Ministry of National Education with the Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques.

This year, among these 2000 students were the TAE class (Building technicians, assistant architect and construction economist) of the High school in the Gustave-Eiffel building in Cernay. Designating the best film was difficult as the five nominated films were of quality, in different genres, but each with a strong message.

Five films were to be discovered to discuss it. Teenagers , by Sébastien Lifshitz, evokes this critical and difficult passage where young people seek each other and must choose their path. They are confronted with the fear of failure, with budding loves, friendships, a relationship with adults that is not always obvious… The students found that the director had been able to make people feel this long time which drags on and where, already , there are a lot of barriers. They were also sensitive to the quest at the center of the film. Antoinette in the Cévennes , by Caroline Vignal, a tragicomedy with a flight of the character through the landscape of the Cévennes, a tale where the fairy is reborn from its ashes.

Summer 85 by François Ozon plays on the link between fiction and reality and questions: how to remain faithful to memory? Is the loved one fantasized? What is the role of the imagination in reconstructing the past? All this against a backdrop of nostalgia for the 80s. The pupils were thus able to wonder, like the main protagonist, about the way in which we can escape its history.

Thoughts on feeling in love

The three films mentioned above address the feeling of love, from its birth to its climax, sometimes leading to a breakup. It is also difficult, for the pupils, not to be embarrassed by an unpacking of bodies and emotions, especially within the framework of a collective projection. The show is also played in the room, where everyone is subject to the gaze of his comrades. The film of the selection which uses the love game the most and which tries to analyze its springs is The things we say, the things we do , by Emmanuel Mouret. The complexity of human relationships was not always obvious to the students. Many prefer and believe in sincerity and simplicity of feelings.

Finally, the students appreciated the slightly offbeat characters from the film. Goodbye idiots, by Albert Dupontel, individuals on the margins who meet and unite. Thanks to burlesque effects and situations, they shake up and question our modern society, which upsets the unconscious scheme of the quest for money at any cost and of success at the expense of feelings. A beautiful lesson in life, according to the students, and a film that allows you to have a good time with your family.

The high school students did not stand out from their comrades in other regions, nor from film professionals, since they awarded the César for best film to this work by Albert Dupontel. Perhaps they will have the chance to discuss with the director, since he will travel to the schools which took part in this action. Ms Pourcelot and Crista and Mr Gallois, the three teachers who took part in the operation, underline that we must thank the Académie des Césars and Degesco (General Directorate of School Education of National Education) for this system, which offers young people a rich cultural contribution, makes it possible to give a critical eye and to refine the gaze on the adult cinema of tomorrow.
