Air pollution from the garbage dump fire en route to the Pacific would be the cause.

Due to air pollution due to the fire that occurred in the garbage dump located on the route to the Pacific, Anabella Giracca, head of the Ministry of Education (Mineduc) informed the educational community that classes will continue to be suspended until further notice.

“Due to recommendations from the Ministry of Health and the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), classes are suspended until further notice. I ask you to pay attention to the channels. Our commitment is to protect the student community. We are now implementing distance education models, in case this is prolonged,” he stated.

The suspension of educational activities in the departments of Guatemala, Sacatepéquez and Escuintla has been in place since April 9 due to air pollution associated with the fire being fought at the landfill of the Authority for the Sustainable Management of the Basin and Lake Amatitlán (AMSA).

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) indicated that air quality is classified as “harmful to health.” For its part, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) recommended maintaining the preventive action implemented at the beginning of this week. “For Mineduc, it is important to protect the health of boys, girls, adolescents, young people, teachers and staff who work in public, private, cooperative, municipal and academies schools, which is why the suspension of educational activities in the three departments affected by air pollution,” details the institution.
