In the 2021/22 school year, almost 314,000 schoolchildren and students attended a public or private educational institution in the canton. That’s nearly 4,000 more than last year and 15 percent more than ten years ago, according to the latest education statistics released on Tuesday.
The annual increase in the number of primary school students is decisive for the growth of the entire Zurich education system. Within a year, growth at this level was 1.2 percent, which corresponds to 1483 students.
The ETH was not included in this census by the canton because it is a federal institution.

The increasing number of students is one of the many reasons why the shortage of teachers is getting worse. Currently, i.e. six weeks before the start of the new school year, around 180 positions are still being advertised at Zurich’s elementary schools.
Most vacancies are at primary level. As an emergency measure, municipalities can now also employ people without teacher training. However, these positions are limited to one year.
